Coronavirus by Jake Ryan

Due to the outbreak of Coronavirus, I decided to do some research on the topic. As of now, there are over 92,000 cases of Coronavirus worldwide. On top of this, 3,000 people have died of this virus; however, only six people have died in the United States (two of which in Seattle.) According to the World Health Organization, the Coronavirus has symptoms such as "fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties." Furthermore, the World Health Organization explains that "...regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs," could help to prevent the spread of the disease. They also warn to "Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing." I decided to find out what people in Sparta High School think about the Coronavirus.

Emma Sears, a junior at Sparta High School, stated her opinion on the topic. She thinks that "it is overexaggerated by the media and more people die from the flu so it is not that big of a threat." Deanna Masucci agrees and states that "The media is hyping it up and it really is not that deep." Luca Budofsky disagrees and says "It is a valid reason for concern and an incurable virus like this is inevitable."

Clearly, this school has some mixed feelings about the topic. I believe that we should be cautious about what is to come with the virus. More funding should be given to the CDC to increase research about the virus which could lead to the production of a vaccine.

  1. Honestly, this new outbreak is pretty scary, especially since you may not notice the symptoms. It's also pretty ironic how the Corona virus comes out when we first start learning about bacteria and viruses in biology. I loved how you interviewed people as well.

  2. I want to believe that everyone is overreacting, but I also feel like we won't really know that for a while.

  3. I said to myself a couple of nights ago that I think Coronavirus is going to blow up and then I prayed it didn't. I woke up the next morning and saw the news that number of cases in New York, tripled. Everyday, it keeps growing and growing. I think people are just shocked at how fast it has escalated.

  4. The coronavirus is crazy, man. You can spread it without even being symptomatic! It's cool how you interviewed people to get their take on it, and I agree that we should be cautious.

  5. You posted this on March 3rd. It is now March 29th. A LOT has changed since and, unfortunately, in a bad way.
