Finding Other News - Jack Budofsky

     As more time passes, the more it seems that COVID-19 is the only thing going on in the world right now. At least, if you were to look at any news feed right now, it would look that way. Every single article is somehow related to the virus. But obviously thats not the only thing happening that's worthy of having an article written about, for an example, the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Obran has recently been given rule indefinatly, which the EU has done very little to stop. But that story isn't making headlines, despite it being an important event for the future of democracy in the nation.
     So is it a problem that its become more difficult to find other news? Maybe. The thing is, the coronavirus should be at the top of the news right now, because the scale of the pandemic cannot be understated. Right now, there are predictions that as many as 240,000 Americans could die from the disease. There are rarely events in news that affect so many people, so its important for everyone to understand it as much as possible. And on the other hand, the virus really is affecting everything about how society functions. It's affecting trade and every nation's economy, foreign relations, and how people interact with each other. So everything that would you would think woulf be unaffected by the virus is in one way or another. Even in the example of Hungary's democracy changing, a large part of the reason why the Prime Minister was able to due what he did was because of emergency measures taken because of COVID-19. The virus has certainly changed a lot about what the media is presenting to people, but maybe is within reason.

    I agree that is is almost impossible to find other news, which does show the importance of the issue, but also makes me sad.

The idea of fate confuses me. I don't really understand how something will happen no matter what you do. It just seems very unlikely. I think we're constantly making choices that lead to occurrences. We make so many decisions a day that it seems impossible that fate can find a way around it all.  Awhile ago, I saw something called the Butterfly Effect, which doesn't exactly relate to fate but it makes sense to me. The idea is that a butterfly flapping its wings can cause a tornado on the other side of the world. Essentially, small changes can have large impacts. I haven't formed my thoughts about this school year yet because it's only the second day but my first day was straight fire. I got to reunite with the friends and meet my teachers and all the good stuff but I did burst into tears after school because I realized that I do actually have to go back every day. Not mentally prepared yet. I may have also just started sobbing because I woke up at 5:30 a.m. but I'm sure I'll have worse states of delirium as the year progresses. In all honesty, every first day of school has been the same for me since I became a sentient being somewhere around the second grade. After a bit of pondering on what story I should put on display for the topic of creative writing, I realized that my idea bank is completely dry. So, as they say, write from experience! The holidays are fast approaching, as they always are and with it, a new decade. 2020. That's a big one. When we look back in time, it seems as if everything gets classified by the decade. The '70s are groovy, the '80s are colorful, the '90s are... slimy? All I can think of is Moon Shoes and Nickelodeon-gak. And Rugrats. For some reason, our culture has always been obsessed with nostalgia. The kids that got inspired grew up, and they draw from their childhood, which then inspires the next generation, who writes about their childhood and so forth.
