Social Distancing - Gabby Canzoniero
March 12. The last day we were in school. Everyone left school anticipating to have school the next day, thinking it would be a normal half day. Later that Thursday, we all received the notification that we would not have school tomorrow, because our teachers were going to spend the day in the school setting out a plan of what to do in case we had to close due to the coronavirus. No one thought that the possibility of the school closing due to the virus was an actual possibility, but we were all excited by the chance of having 2 weeks off from school. Then on Friday, everyone was extremely surprised when every student received an email stating that the schools were closed until Monday, March 30. Everyone was looking forward to the time off and was ready to have the chance to see our friends every day.
That weekend, we then received multiple emails from all of our teachers outlining the work we were scheduled to do over the next few weeks so that we could keep up with our schoolwork and continue to learn. This was great that our school system was able to provide us with a way to keep learning because there were so many other school systems out there that had to completely shut down because their students did not have access to computers for online education.
The first couple of days of social distancing went okay, but then the boredom started to kick in. People started to realize that they really couldn't leave their houses to visit their friends every day like they had initially hoped. The schoolwork was also a lot more for some students than they had anticipated, and suddenly people started wanting to have school again. With the additional blow of sports- college, professional, and high school alike- being canceled, people became irritated quickly and wished for this whole coronavirus situation to be over with already.
March 30 was supposed to be the day we went back to school, but this date has been extended to April 20, with various rumors flying around that this date will be pushed back later, or we might never go back to school this year at all. Nothing is, of course, set in stone, but it doesn't stop people from suspecting that these hopes of starting up spring sports and school again are all just fantasies and that we won't be out of quarantine until summer.
Social distancing is occurring all over the United States, so, of course, Sparta is not the only town experiencing this frustration at losing weeks of their school year and sports season. And while this feels like the end of the world, there are many benefits that are coming with social distancing, such as the spread of this virus decreasing, which leads me to believe that this will all work out in the end.

when we got off school March 12 I did not expect to be off for this long!
