Some good news By Charlotte Putnam

When I realized this months blog topic was current events my thoughts immediately went to corona as I'm sure everyone else did. However I decided I wanted to report on something different. I figured that with everything going on right now it would be a good idea for me to share some of the positive things going on. So here a few few short current events that happened during 2020.

1. An Australian cafe owner Pete Darmos took out $10,000 of his own money. The 62 year old man spent his afternoon handing out $100 bills to unemployed strangers. Darmos like most restaurants was forced to close his shop. However this didn't stop him, as he wanted to help others. In Box Hill there was a huge line outside of the social security offices. Darmos gave everyone in line a $100 bill He started at the back and worked his way up. Pete says "I know a $100 isn't a lot, but it meant a lot to these people."

2. The Appalachian mountains are often thought as a coal country. However, the mountains actually have one of the most bio diverse ecosystems. A lot of coal mining has left irreparable damage to the ecosystems. through Kentucky and West Virginia there are bare hills. 70 year old Patrick Angel has decided to fix this. He is the lead force in re-greening the coal country. He has worked among many others to plant 187 million trees along 275,000 arcs

3. Restaurants are now giving away free meals and coffee as gifts to doctors and emergency responders. Starbucks cafes across Canada and the U.S. are offering a small free coffee to anyone who identifies as a front line responder for the next month. Krispy Kreme is joining this trend and offering free boxes of donuts to health care workers every Monday. Other businesses are beginning to join this such as Crocs and Tropical Smoothie.

These are just a few short stories that share good news, and there are so many more just like them. During this time of uncertainty and disaster communities are coming together and trying to help each other out in the ways that they can.

  2. It is encouraging to see many people and businesses stepping up and trying to help those who are struggling or working so hard on the front lines of this virus.
