The Future of Earth's Beaches - Chris Byrnes

If climate change is not dealt with, we could lose 50% of the world's beaches by the end of the century. Yes, half of it, according to an EU Joint Research Center. The EU utilized Satelite photos to "track the way beaches changed over the past 30 years and project how global warming might affect them in the future." More than one-third of the world's coastlines are beaches or sandy areas.

Erosion is likely to affect more than 328 feet. Yes, a little more than an entire football field. Now, this all depends on the Earth's temperature. Our current rate and projector will wipe out about half of the world's beaches. Should the rate worsen (meaning, become higher), more beaches could be wiped out. Climate change has a reoccurring theme of trying to lower the temperature. This yet again another example of how it ties into the big picture and how important it is.

Now, most of us might not be alive when this occurs, but future generations will. Your kid's will, and their kid's will, and even their kids. You might be a great-grandmother or great-grandfather. Now, I'm sure most of us have been on the beach. It's a Jersey thing. Imagine losing half of the world's beach. Goodbye- vacation. Goodbye memories.

Should we lose all these beaches, tourism, recreation, and wildlife as well will be negatively affected. In fact, beaches are natural barriers from storms for people living along the coast.

By reducing greenhouse gases (which can be done through things like Nuclear Energy, etc...) 40% of shores retreating are likely to be prevented. Other actions like " effective site-specific coastal planning" as done in the Netherlands could help as well.

  1. 50% of the world's beaches! That is a horrible thought!

  2. 50% of the world's beaches gone? What in the world? That's a huge impact in such a short period of time! A future without beaches is an incredibly bleak one.

  3. Half of the beaches in the world is an insanely high number. I can't even imagine what that would be like.
