The Virus that's Breaking the Internet by Brittany Brannigan
As we all know, there has recently been a major outbreak of the virus called the Coronavirus. Although it is only said to kill 2% of the people that acquire this disease, many people are taking drastic precautions to make sure their families and themselves don't get this disease. According to the CDC, the virus is mainly spread from person-to-person through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. At first, this may seem like the seasonal cold or sinus infection, but as the symptoms get worse, you may experience a fever, a cough, and/or shortness of breath.
Yes, this virus can be fatal, but it is not as fatal as everyone makes it out to be. There is major stigma around the Coronavirus, especially since no one really knows very much about this disease. This stigma is what's breaking the internet. Every news channel has done a report on the Coronavirus, making society scared and almost helpless. It's even to the point where schools are considering closing school for at least 2 weeks and having every student do online school from home. Is this too extreme?
I compare the Coronavirus to the Zika virus or Ebola. Each year, it feels like there is a new virus out to scare the public. Look at us now, we're all fine. Either the Coronavirus will continue on to become this very lethal virus, or it will die out like the rest of the diseases have.
The New York Times asked multiple students about their thoughts on the Coronavirus. Shiv, from King of Prussia, PA, stated, "If the mortality rate is 2% and a school has 1000 people, then about 20 people will die due to the Coronavirus. Over the broad spectrum, if 2% of everyone on Earth dies (world population of 8 billion), then 160,000,000 (160 million) people will die." Shiv does bring up a very good point. Losing 20 students from my school would be devastating, and the fact that we are all in danger brings a whole new factor. Hopefully, scientists and doctors find a way to cure this virus so no one has to suffer or be scared that this virus could very well hit them.

When you break it down to the amount of students, it does sound much scarier!
