Modern Day Technology By Heather Holick

Recently I watched the show Outer Banks on Netflix. The show was really good, however this is not a review of it. The show has blown up and is now #3 on Netflix in the US. I feel as though so many people especially from my generation enjoyed the show because they want to be living the life the characters are. I don't mean the finding the treasure, adventurous aspect of the show, although that does seem really fun. I mean the life that they are living with little to no modern technology.

I am not going to spoil anything that goes on in the show, i'm just going to give a quick introduction. It takes place in the Outer Banks and is focused around the life of four teenagers that are best friends. The show splits the Outer Banks into two economical areas. The one side of the island is where the Kooks live, the rich people. The other side of the island is where the Pogues live, the poor people, which is what the four main characters consider themselves. They live the island life, constantly having fun on each others boats, driving around together, and at the beach. The four friends rarely use any technology in the show, actually for most of it their side of the islands power is out completely.

Modern technology has impacted the world in so many ways. It has made it easier to communicate, learn, read, and do many other things. Especially while being in quarantine, technology is certainly a huge part of my everyday life. I do all my school work on the computer and I basically live on my phone. As much as these inventions have advanced the world they also have some disadvantages. You can't have a real human to human connection through a screen and you can not truly interact on a device. You can see what people are saying and doing on social media, however you can not really know them.

The other day our assignment was to answer a question regarding how social media applies to Zimbardo's "7 Social Processes that Grease the Slippery Slope of Evil." Doing this assignment really exposed everything that is wrong with social media. From dehumanizing others through a screen, to the anonymous aspect of saying and doing whatever you want under a concealed identity, and the idea that you are not directly responsible for what is posted because it is through a device. All seven of Zimbardo's processes did apply in one way or another.

This assignment as well as the show truly made me wonder what it would be like if everyone didn't have technology or even if we just didn't have our phones. Would we have deeper connections like the ones shown in the show. Would we have more fun just living in the moment, not caring about what is happening online. I know that we would have to actually get to know someone before judging them. I know that we would have to have real conversations in person instead of over the phone.

In reality there is not going to be a time where we will get to experience life without technology because it is such a big part of our lives. However, I do think that using modern day technology less, especially when we are with other people will benefit us greatly.

  1. I love your approach to this and I always wonder why we crave less technology, but then don't change our use of it.
