New Hobbys - Gabby Canzoniero

During this quarantine, I've had a lot of free time on my hands, and to try and pass the time, I decided to make a blanket. My grandma taught me how to crochet and knit when I was younger, and I've made a pillow and a scarf from crocheting, but during this time of social distancing, I wanted to make a blanket.

I've never made a blanket because not only does it take a lot of time, but it takes a lot of yarn. But now I have had the perfect opportunity. Plenty of time to knit this blanket and I am able to order yarn online in case I run out of yarn (which I did). I had a plan laid out for my blanket, and when we were originally given 2 weeks away from school, I thought quarantine would be over before I finish this blanket. Now that the time away from school has been extended and I've gotten a lot faster at knitting, I might finish my blanket before we go back to school.

I decided to make a bunch of individual squares, thinking that this would give me a fun pattern. I made blue squares, yellow squares, and squares that were both yellow and blue. I wanted to make my blanket 9 squares by 9 squares, resulting in 81 squares total. I thought that I would end up making the blanket smaller than this, but so far it has been a perfect size. I also thought each square wouldn't take a while to make, but in reality, each square takes about 45 minutes, but that goes to show how much free time I have to knit.

The only part that I haven't liked about making this blanket is that because the blanket is made up of individual squares, I have to sew all the squares together. I'm not a fan of sewing, so sewing all the squares together hasn't been a lot of fun, but the rest of the blanket has been. So far, I've knitted 59 squares and sewn 54 of them together.

  1. This is amazing and now you will forever have your quarantine blanket to tell the story of what you did while home.
