Youtube and others.- By Bektur
With the rise of the internet, various websites have popped up like Youtube, where people can simply watch other people, their creations, or skits. It's a new type of entertainment, and it's funny to me how Youtube, the website I spend a huge amount of time on, is relatively new and has only been around since 2005. But it's presence now is so big, with around 1.5 billion users monthly and 300 hours of video is uploaded every minute!
What I also find interesting about Youtube is that there are people who's jobs are to make youtube video, and there are some millionaires who made their fortune via youtube. The way 'content creators' get paid on youtube is through ads. The simplified version goes as follows; the more views your video has, the more ads are placed on it, the more you get paid. According to this website I found, on average, a youtuber will make 18$ from a thousand views. But of course as your popularity grows, you can branch out into other ways to earn besides ads on videos, you could make merch, get sponsered by companies, or make a patreon where people can donate.
Another website like Youtube is called Twitch, a streaming platform, perhaps the most popular one, where people livestream themselves and others watch. It's different than Youtube because of the 'Live' aspect, everything on there happens in real time. Streamers could play games, react to videos, record their everyday life, or just talk with people watching via the chat. Livestreams can last for hours and people can also make money off of the website. Twitch contains ads, but a majority of income comes from donations and subscribers. Viewers can donate, and usually get to write a text to speech message that the streamer can hear. Or they can subscribe for 5$ a month and get some perks like custom emotes, a little icon next to their name in chat, etc. The perks are not much and the subscribers don't do it for the perks, but rather appreciation for the content they're watching. This way Twitch is a lot less views reliant and you can earn a good amount off of 2k viewers if you stream everyday.
With the advancement in technology, my guess is that Youtube and other websites like it will only become more and more popular as time goes on, meaning that more and more will begin to make it their fulltime job. And honestly, it's a reallly good job in some aspects. You can set your own hours, you can make content around what you like, and compared to a desk job, it's just a lot more enjoyable. But i guess the main problem with making it a job is that it's not that stable. Your income depends on your viewer count, and you constantly have to make sure that your viewers stay. I just thought it was interesting.

I still don't fully understand how people even make money this way? Is it the sponsors?
ReplyDeleteI always thought it was cool how people can make youtube videos as their main job. Although it's probably pretty difficult for the average person to get a good following.
