Natural Disaster during the Pandemic- Connor Ailara

Thousands of people of Michigan are given orders to evacuate after the Sanford  and Edenville dam are breached.  The threat of flooding is great.  After the dam breaches water has surged into the Tittabawasee River.  The river has been observed to have surges up to 38ft.  A state of emergency has been issued for midland county as authorities anticipated the county to be under 9ft of water.  Heavy rains from 4-7 inches caused flooding in other parts of the region including Chicago.  To make matters worse evacuation is complicated by Covid-19.  As people are packed into shelters fears of the coronavirus spreading is great.  With 52,350 cases in the state protective measures must be taken.  Masks and personal protective equipment are provided at shelters, but will it be enough?  With the increased frequency of people in small areas can be expected to lead to an uptick in Covid-19 cases.  Meanwhile, goverment officials urge people to abide by social distancing to the best of their ability.
In the midst of the pandemic we hardly ever think about how natural disasters can effect us.  While every one is trying to avoid getting the coronavirus natural disasters destroy homes and force people into situations where they are in danger of getting Covid-19.  Resources are strained to try to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and to deal with this massive flood.  In the pandemic America doesn't have the time to deal with natural disaster.

  1. I'm surprised I haven't heard a thing about any of this. I hope these people end up safe, especially with all of the things going on right now. Great post.
