New Job By Lucy Partin
Being in quarantine has been very tough but before that I had gotten a job. I work as a cashier and I love it because I get to talk to people and dogs all day. So I decided to write about my job and what it was like before quarantine.
Is it that time of our lives when the teenage population is released into the real world and allowed access to things like jobs, Yea it isn’t as weird as it sounds. Although most teenagers aren’t working a 9-5 job five days a week. We work when we can and do jobs that we like. I mean there are always exceptions but I like to believe that teenagers have so much time they chose to get a job that they enjoy doing or at least make money to save up for their future, whatever it ends up to be. This is somewhat the same for me. I applied for many jobs all around Sparta. Some I liked and some I prayed that they would lose my number. You may be asking yourself, “then why did you apply to work there then." Well, you see as a teenager that does two sports and takes place in after school activities, honors classes and has an avid social life, I will take any job someone is willing to offer. It is not that I am struggling with money, it's just the constant fact that college is coming up and soon I will need to buy a car that I will most likely need to pay for by myself.
So I applied to jobs and one of the places that called me back was this wonderful small business called Living Pawsively. They had me work on the weekends which was fine because my hours are from 12-6 which allows me to have a social life while still keeping a job at the same time. It also gives me something to do because I don't hang out with my friends every moment of every day so it’s a good break and a way to fill time. And truth be told after only a few months I kind of love it. They have taught me to use the cash register and greet customers in a normal welcoming way that says hey come buy stuff at our store (add big creepy smile). I learned the grooves and ways of the store. I know where everything is, so basically I own it. I’ve also made new friends. Granted they are like two times my age but they are so nice and love to gossip with me and play games when no one is in the store. There is also this girl Kai who is a junior. She goes to school at a small church and works a few days out of the week. The only days she works that overlaps with mine are Sunday. And let me tell you, I look forward to those days. She is kinda like my best friend at work I guess you can call it. She helps me learn the way you restock shelves and clean the treat counter. (although I did suck up a few treats with the vacuum which made us laugh the whole day). I think we could be good friends, we have so much in common and I am so happy and relieved that I have someone that I can talk to on the days when foot traffic is slow.
There are also the days when business is booming, to say the least. We have times where so many people are at the store I have to work the cash register BY MYSELF. I know, who would interest me with the money, but I guess I’m just that trustworthy. But sometimes I have trouble. As you can probably tell I'm not the best typer. It took me decades to get the words in my head on the screen because my fingers don’t always hit the right keys. That does not come in handy when your trying to find out someone's last name and they spell it like Gratcofsky and it has secret letters and they say in 3 seconds giving me no time to even comprehend the letters it takes to spell it. Or you get the customers that spell your name like Green. Pretty easy except when they say no e. At that point, I started panicking because I did not know how to spell Green with no e. Only an era later I realized he meant no e at the end. But what didn’t help matters was when he and his wife started arguing about whose first name it was under. I give that experience a 3/10 do not recommend. But otherwise the store is fun and I am so thankful to have a job there.
AS you can see my job is amazing. It is so cute and a perfect fit. Since I have been working there since half way through November I have made friends with the customers and I feel like I fit right in. The store gives you a lot of freedom to shop on your own however all the cashiers are trained to do other things to. We know the ingredients in our food, how to do some handy work around the building and even how to handle dogs when a customer has problems. This business is a small family business but even though I am not family they make me feel included and happy. I could not ask for a better first job. They took a chance on me and I will be forever thankful.

So maybe if you're ever around come stop in and say hello, and if it's your dog's birthday, get a free treat.
Wow! That's honestly sounds like such a fun job, I mean except for the name spelling part lol.
