Rooftop Koreans and the LA Riots - Bektur Totoshev

The recent protests turned riots happening America right now mirror many riots of the past, but there is one aspect in particular I want to talk about. The 1992 Los Angeles riots were a result of the aqcuital of  all 4 police officers in the beating of Rodney King. The riots were extremely violent and arson and looting was everywhere, resulting in damages to the city of over $1 billion dollars. Almost half of the damages dispraportionaley affected Koreatown, a settelment largely made up of Koreans, as the riots were most violent there. When the rioters first began to arrive in Koreatown, police was called and they arrived to try to stop the rioters. However, as it begun to become more violent and shots were fired by the rioters, the police completely abandoned Koreatown, leaving the civilians there to fend for themselves. Coincidentally, roads between Koreatown and wealthier towns were blocked off and police lines were drawn at independent cities like Beverly Hills and West Hollywood. A Korean-American later told reporters,"It was containment. The police cut off trafic out of Koreatown, while we were trapped on the other side without help. Those roads are a gateway to a richer neighborhood. It can't be denied." Left to fend for themselves due to the cowardly actions of the police, many Koreans armed themselves with the support of local gunshops and began to fight back, or more specifically, shoot back. As many in Koreatown were immigrants from Korea, they had some idea of what they were doing, as Korea requires mandatory military service. The name Rooftop Koreans became popular because the Koreans would take defensive positions on the rooftops of buildings, and would shoot from there. The rioters were eventually pushed back, mainly due to the support of the 'Rooftop Koreans'.
During the curent situation today, I feel as if any rooftop Koreans would pop up now, they would be poorly recieved by the media. Think about it. If, during these current riots, the rioters became armed with weapons(I feel it's highly dependent on this factor), and a shop owner were to arm themselves and shoot upon a crowd that was attempting to loot their store, I feel as if that would be frowned upon. But why? Is it not in defense of their property? Of course multi-billion dollar corporations would hardly feel the loss of a single store, but I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about people that had worked hard to open a small busisness and are trying to simply keep it open throughout these events. I feel as if the current rioters have lost sense of what these riots started over. Riot against the precincts, against the corporations that had supported them, against the weak government officials that had allowed this to happen, against the racists that continue these kinds of events, but leave the innocent bystanding small businesses alone. But of course that's just an opinion, what's your guys take on this?

  1. This is a really important issue and I tend to agree that they would not be taken well if this happened now.
