Salvatore Guinta, Modern Day Hero- Parker Williamson

Before I had no idea what do for my blog i was like,"I've learn a lot what do I talk about." Then I remembered this modern day hero assignment that we did in class during the hero's journey section. Coincidentally enough it was also about military hero.
Salvatore Guinta or Sal was born in Iowa on January 21, 1985. He was just a normal guys working at a subway. He never really thought about joining the military until he heard an ad from local recruiting that promised a free t-shirt. So he went to the recruiting office talked with them and got his free T-shirt and decided to enlist. He was assigned to the 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team which was base in Vincenza, Italy. Interestingly enough, he met his wife in Italy who was on an internship there. After a little bit, Sal was deployed in Afghanistan for a year. In a little skirmish he was shot in the leg and four other soldiers died from a bomb explosion. Even though that was a terrible experience he stayed strong, he was not gonna let any more of his companions die on his watch. After that he returned from deployment for a year or so then he was redeployed in Afghanistan. In his second deployment, one night his platoon was on the night patrol in the most dangerous valley in Afghanistan. They were ambushed by the Taliban. He and everyone in his platoon were running for cover. Sal saw that his commanding officer had been hit in the helmet a fell. While Sal was sprinting he was hit by a bullet in an armored spot and the gun strapped on his back. Sal and his fellow soldiers regrouped and started to move forward shooting and throwing grenades to reach more injured soldiers. They succeeded in bringing back the injured men to a safer area. Though, that was when Sal had realized that they were missing one man, Sergeant John Brennan, who happened to be Sal's best friend. Determine to get his best friend he went in alone. At the top of a hill he saw his friend getting dragged away by two Taliban soldiers. Sal killed one and injured the other. His squad came to provide cover while Sal was trying to keep John Brennan alive. John Brennan was taken away to a safer place but he sadly died the day after. Sal and his platoon went on with their mission. On November 16, 2010 Sal was given the Medal of Honor which hasn't been given to anyone since the Vietnam war. In my opinion, he deserved the medal of honor he put his life at risk for his fellow soldier. He had been shot, in a more armored spot but it probably still hurt. And he put his life at risk for his best friend who may have died from his wounds but Sal did not let the Taliban keep their hands on him. He made sandwiches before he was a hero. I shows that anyone can be a hero not matter who you are or what you come from. Salvatore Guinta also has a memoir Living With Honor if you want to learn more about his awesome story.
