Escaping the Extraordinary Part 2 - Sila Paniker
*If you haven't already read part 1 in both perspectives: Steph & Elena *
After her initial shock, Elena leaned in and whispered, "Here's the plan," She explained how when she had died, she had tried to leave the hospital as a soul but an evil man named Kevin had prevented her. He was the only other human that had been able to see her since she'd passed. She pulled out an empty locket and continued, "This, here, is what stopped my soul from..." She went on, explaining that Kevin had taken the gemstone from it, but I was barely listening. Why would he do that? This doesn't make any sense.
"Woah, woah, woah," I interjected to repeat my confusion out loud. "Why would he not want your soul to leave the hospital?" Elena explained that Kevin's daughter had been another victim in the car crash she'd died in. Kevin wanted revenge for his daughter's death and had targeted Elena.
"He hasn't been here since his daughter died but I thought I saw him the other day. Just thought I'd warn you," she continued. "Now, any questions?" she asked nonchalantly. I stood there, gaping at her, trying to process the information she'd just thrown at me.
"N-n-no, I don't thin so, but if you need this gemstone to leave the hospital, how do you know where this evil- Kevin, put it?" I managed to ask.
"Well, the only place he could've put it where I couldn't access it is the kitchen." She explained that the reason she needed my help was because the kitchen faced her with an unlikely barrier. Basil. I, a human, could get past this ghost repellent and get the gemstone. Wow. Kevin's an evil genius. Did he do research on ghost repellent or something? Also, it can't be healthy to have an old gemstone hiding with basil used in food for patients. But that's not important right now.
"Are you in or not?" Elena looked at me hopefully. I looked at her, eyes full of hope, almost pleading. How could I say no?
"Yes, I'm in. Anything to help a friend," I fixed her with a warm smile. I followed her down the hallway to the stairs where we approached the basement. I crept along the wall, overly cautious. Elena abruptly stopped in front of two rusty doors. The kitchen. She turned to me and whispered,"You got this, Steph. Just go into the kitchen, find the spice cabinet--." My heart pounded as I listened to her speech. She reassured me that the chefs were on break then nudged me on and it was go time.
I warily stepped into the kitchen and looked around. I peered over my shoulder through the small windows on the doors and saw Elena pacing in the hallway. I took a deep breath and scanned the kitchen for a spice cabinet. Careful to stay quiet, I tiptoed around the pots and pans towards the cabinet in the back. I approached it and eased it open. Nutmeg, oregano, parsley, basil! I slowly lifted the jar of basil and scanned the cabinet. There it was. Tucked behind the parsley where the basil had been. I grabbed it and tucked it in my pocket. Suddenly, I heard screaming. What's happening? I tried to run but I kicked a shelf and pots went flying. I didn't slow down, just continued for the door.
When I broke through the doors, a pair of hands grabbed me and then I was being dragged down the hallway. I flailed my arms as I tried to understand what was happening.
Elena ran after us, yelling, "Kevin, stop!" Kevin. This was Kevin. I thrashed around to break free as he ran up the stairs and towards the hospital exit. He turned a corner and now we were in the main wing of the hospital. Elena was still behind us but I could no longer see her. There were so many reasons why I couldn't let Kevin continue to haul me out of the hospital so I continued to fight.
All of a sudden, a deep voice hollered, "Stop!" Kevin froze and I fell to the ground. A burly security guard approached us and said to Kevin, "Sir, you're going to come with me." I couldn't help but giggle when I thought about what he'd say when he tried to explain what he was doing. He was chasing me to get a gemstone to prevent a teenage ghost's soul from leaving the hospital. He'd sound slightly unhinged but that was a problem he could deal with. Now, I had to find Elena. I turned a corner to the nearest empty hallway where she'd retreated to watch the scene. I reassured her that everything was fine and slipped the gemstone from my pocket to hers.
Her tense expression softened, "Stephanie, I don't know how I will ever repay you. You saved my life and helped me get out of here." I could feel her gratitude radiating from her glowing body as I assured her that there was no reason to repay me. I had wanted to help her and seeing her happy was a reward on its own.
She abruptly began a goodbye speech and I was taken aback. But then I realized if I was her, I'd be rushing out of this hospital as fast as I could. She warned me to enjoy life because it goes fast.
"Maybe I'll see you again one day," she said as she enveloped me in a hug. When she let go, she placed the gemstone in her locket and her soul began to levitate. As she floated into the air, she waved goodbye and she began to fade.
I watched her leave and smiled. "Bye Elena! See you soon," I called, waving until I could no longer see her.
